Help with Origami Remote.

Origami Remote puts a live Origami Coder session from VS Code on your phone. Read the chat, send a prompt, stop a turn, answer a permission request. The work stays on your computer; the phone is the remote control.

Pairing

Paired in a minute.

  1. On your computer, install Origami Coder in VS Code and open the Remote pane in the Origami sidebar. It shows a pairing code as a QR and, under it, the relay it will use. The default relay is the free one run by Origami Labs; you can type your own.
  2. On the phone, open Origami Remote and point the camera at the QR. The camera is used only for this scan.
  3. Wait for the desktop pane to say verified and Session key: on, and for the app's status pill to turn green. Your open chats appear on the phone.
  4. From now on the phone reconnects on its own whenever VS Code is running with the pairing active. Nothing to type again.

Using it

  • Read and send. The transcript is the same one the desktop shows. Type in the composer and tap Send; Enter breaks the line.
  • Stop a turn. The stop control on the phone stops the turn on the desktop.
  • Answer a permission request. When the agent asks to run a tool, the card appears on the phone. Approve or refuse there; the desktop's own bar clears by itself. Settings has two optional Face ID switches: one to unlock the app when it opens or returns, and Require Face ID for approvals.
  • Ask or YOLO. The chip in the chat strip shows whether a chat asks before every tool (Ask) or runs without asking (YOLO). Switching it from the phone is signed by the phone's own key; the desktop shows who switched it.
  • Several chats. The strip lists the chats the desktop has open; tap one to read it. Reading a chat the desktop is not looking at still streams.
  • Reopening the app paints the last transcript from the phone's own cache at once, then catches up with the desktop.

Forgetting a pairing

In the app, open Settings (the gear at the end of the chat strip) and choose Forget this pairing, then confirm with Forget pairing. This deletes the pairing secret from the phone's Keychain and wipes the cached transcripts; the desktop will need to enrol the phone again. Settings also shows the Relay the pairing uses and the Paired date, which is how to check the phone against the desktop's Remote pane. On the computer, the Remote pane's Revoke ends the pairing from that side; a phone that still holds the old secret can no longer connect. To pair a different phone, or the same one again, make a new code on the computer and scan it.

What people hit first

The pill stays on "connecting"

The phone can only mirror a session while VS Code is open on the computer with the Origami Coder extension running and the pairing active. A computer that is asleep, or a VS Code window that was closed, has nothing to send. Wake it and the phone reconnects on its own.

"Active in another window"

One VS Code window owns a pairing at a time. If you opened a second window, its Remote pane shows this and a Take over button. Take over moves the phone to that window.

The transcript is on screen but nothing new arrives

Switch away and back, or reopen the app; it reconnects when it returns to the foreground. If the pill is green and the chat still does not move, check that the desktop chat is actually running a turn. The phone shows what the desktop shows, no more.

The relay refused a new pairing

The hosted relay has a daily traffic budget and a cap on connections. If it is full, pairings already connected keep working and a new code is refused until the next day. You can run your own relay in about ten minutes; the relay page has the steps. The app follows the relay named in the pairing code; there is nothing to type on the phone.

Nothing on the phone should ever ask for a password or a key

There is no account. The only secret is the pairing code, and it is only ever shown on your own computer. If a page or a message asks for anything else, it is not from Origami Labs.

What the app does not do

  • No file browser and no editor on the phone. You read the chat; you do not browse the repo.
  • No tools run on the phone. Every command, edit and search runs on the computer.
  • One phone per pairing. A second phone needs a new code.
  • The phone cannot recover a lost pairing. If the phone loses the secret, pair again.

Still stuck?

Write to support@origami.gratis. Say which iPhone model and iOS version, which version of Origami Coder is installed on the computer (the Remote pane shows it), and what the status pill and the desktop pane say. Do not send the pairing code. The privacy policy for the app is its own page.
